Figure 6. Localised corrosion event on mild steel as mapped using a Scanning Kelvin Probe. Apart from the ability to make measurements in a gaseous environment, Scanning Kelvin Probe can also measure corrosion processes under insulating coatings due to the fact that the detection of the nulling potential VB is achieved via a capacitance ...
The development, implementation and assessment of corrosion probe techniques for the measurement of corrosion rates in utility boilers Doosan Babcock Energy Ltd., Cranfield University, NPL and NETL were involved in laboratory experiments to assess the corrosion resistance of selected materials and provide important corrosion
The corrosion currents from the polarization resistance can be calculated using the above equations if the Tafel slopes are known. If the Tafel slopes are unknown, for example when corrosion mechanism is not known, the R p can still be utilized as a quantitative parameter in order to compare the corrosion resistance of metals under a number of conditions. Because corrosion occurs via electrochemical reactions, electrochemical techniques are ideal for the study of the corrosion processes. In electrochemical studies, a metal sample with a surface area of a few square centimeters is used to model the metal in a corroding system.
